Chapter 10
It was late Sunday morning, and Mei was still dreaming. In her dream, it was snowing beautifully. A half-man-half-beast devil, with a third eye on the tip of its tongue and a jaw bigger than its body, had blooded the snow. The jaw kept dripping blood; the tongue stuck out and could reach far; the eye was fearsome and could read one’s fear. The devil was tearing somebody apart with spike-like teeth. Screams of terror could be heard from the captives. They were all women tied in many vividly prickly cicada-like cages. Their faces were half covered by their black hair fl owered with white snow. It was freezing. They were naked. Mei could see them all, one by one, either crying or dying. She then found herself among them, shaking with fear. But what terrifi ed her the most was the approach of the devil’s tongue sniffi ng around. The eye was reading, and it looked really really cold. Mei stood quaking in despair. She was afraid to die.
